Sun damage Down Deep!

They say beauty is only skin deep. What they don’t tell you is exactly how deep the skin is!

It’s important to know the difference between the layers that make up the largest organ in your body and the effective methods for treating concerns that manifest in each layer. We’ve talked a little about the outermost layer, the epidermis, and how properly exfoliating and hydrating, combined with a good sunscreen, can keep this layer of cells (and YOU, for that matter) looking bright, even-toned, and fresh!

Now it’s time to turn our attention to the dermis, the layer of skin often neglected because of its deeper placement below the obvious epidermis. While the epidermis is our body’s immediate protective barrier, the dermis is the layer where you’ll find your skin’s connective tissues, like collagen and elastin, as well as hair follicles and sweat glands and lymph and blood vessels. In other words, a whole lot of everything takes place in the dermis!collagen bundle

Unfortunately, everything also includes fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin, and dermal pigmentation- all signs of aging following a life-time of UV exposure to the dermal layer.

But while most skin care products only work epidermis-deep, with ingredients too large to penetrate through to the dermis, the dermal layer isn’t exactly out of reach!

Many light-therapies like our LHE (light/heat energy) photofacials are designed to deliver energy deep into the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production on-site and breaking down hyper-pigmentation that is too deep for superficial peels to reach. Combined with at-home care in the form of lightening and/or anti-aging serums (products designed to deliver ingredients into the skin’s deeper layers) and an SPF 30 sunscreen, photofacials are one of the most effective treatments of our skin’s many layers!
