Remember- while keeping the skin protected and hydrated with daily use of a good sunblock and moisturizer will help delay signs of aging, sun exposure in any degree will cause our skin cell production to slow down over time, bringing with it an array of pesky tell-tale signs, including fine lines and sunspots.
It’s always best to combine good products with a good at-home regimen (and in-spa regimen, of course! But more on that later.)
One of the best ways to keep post-summer signs of aging in check is to properly exfoliate your skin.
Exfoliation, first and foremost, aids in the removal of dead skin cells, stimulating new cell production and keeping the skin looking fresh. Furthermore, skin exfoliation helps rid the skin of epidermal pigmentation, found in the top layer of our skin.
While scrubs and clarisonics may bring immediate results in terms of skin texture and softening, it is best to combat epidermal pigmentation through chemical exfoliation techniques.
The active ingredients in chemical exfoliants are small enough to penetrate the surface of the skin, whether they be stronger acids (like lactic and glycolic) or gentler enzymes (papaya-pineapple are our faves!)
At-home chemical exfoliation can be done with:
- Lierac High Peel exfoliant, it contains 10% of glycolic acid, it brings the pH of the skin down to a pH 3 resulting in shedding of skin cells.
- Pevonia Enzymo spheride peeling cream, it contains papaya and pineapple enzymes that act as little pacman that eat the debris stuck in your pores.
- Bioderma moisturizing scrub, its polishing beads polish the skin without micro cuts.
Just be sure not to over-do it. Too much exfoliation can lead to skin redness and sensitivities and can increase your chances of burning during sun exposure.
Masks and scrubs should be used once a week, while creams with ingredients like retinol or glycolic acidshould be used only at night and rotated with richer anti-aging creams that will help replenish the skin and keep it hydrated.
And, as always, don’t forget your SPF!
